Les Paul, legendary guitarist and the inventor of the solid-body electric guitar that bears his name, died Thursday in White Plains New York at the ripe old age of 94. The cause of death was listed as complications from pneumonia.
Mr. Paul was not only an amazing musician, he was a prolific inventor and tinkerer. Guitarists and musicians the world over owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Paul for his many inventions and innovations including the solid body guitar, and various recording techniques including overdubbing and multi-track recording.
Born in a small town in Wisconsin, Les Paul became interested in music at a very young age. His first instrument was the harmonic which he started playing at the age of eight. Soon, he would discover his love for the guitar and by the age of 13, was playing gigs with as a country music guitarist.
In 1948, Les Paul suffered an accident which shattered his right arm at the elbow. The doctors told him there was little hope of their fixing his arm so he would have full movement in it so Mr. Paul asked them to set his arm at an angle so he would still be able to play his guitar. Such was his love of playing.
When he first learned to play, all that was available was an acoustic guitar and a microphone. Les Paul felt that there must be a better way to get a better sound out of a guitar, especially in larger venues where sometimes, the acoustic guitar simply couldn’t cut it. This lead to the invention of “The Log†which was the first solid body electric guitar he built out of an old railroad tie. Eventually, “The Log†would become the familiar Les Paul guitar owned by musicians around the world.
The Les Paul guitar remains a favorite among professional musicians. Marketed by the Gibson company, the Les Paul guitar has become something of a legend all it’s own.
As a result of his efforts and inventions, many guitarists own a Gibson Les Paul guitar and it is because of this that his name will live on forever.
