Gina Carano Vs Cyborg, the fight every MMA fan has been waiting to see for about the last year and a half. Gina “Conviction” Carano has fought the biggest match of her career, taking on Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos in what will forever be known as “Carano vs. Cyborg.â€
The ink in the history book is starting to dry, the first women’s championship MMA fight is over. Congrats to the victor. What an amazing fight!!! As usual the female MMA fighters did not let us down, we only got one round of the fight but it was an amazing round! I am not happy it ended right at the buzzer but sometimes that happens.
Cyborg’s brute force power house style was given the odds to win out the fight by most people but die hard Carano fans were just as certain Gina’s “Conviction” to remain undefeated would not waiver. The fight was hyped as a test to see whether brute force (Cyborg) would win out over strategy and technique (Carano). I’m not sure one fight proves which will win out every time but it certainly was a fun thing to speculate over and debate with people about.
So who won? Who do you think? Okay that is kinda mean of me. But hey, you should have been dedicated enough to stay up and watch the fight. Okay okay some of you probably had to work or had something major come up. I understand. The winner is Cris Cyborg. Congrats Cris.
Gina Carano will remain the face of women’s MMA. She is stunningly beautiful and an amazing fighter. In MMA being undeafeated is great and a truly remarkable accomplishment but having a loss on your record is not the kiss of death. Cris Cyborg lost her first MMA fight.
In fact it is expected. Not having a loss leads to speculation that all of your fights are rigged. Gina has battled that rumor for a very long time. Some say she was used as a pretty face to lure more fans to the sport but was never really given a powerful opponent. I think that is insulting not only to Gina Carano herself but also to all the women she fought. I never saw anything in a fight where I thought it was being thrown. Gina earned her wins and it is just plain wrong to claim otherwise unless you have credible evidence to support the claim. Female MMA fighters definitely face a harder time getting respect for the long hours they train and the beating they take inside the cage. So lay off the “fixed fight” crap already.
Fans were all over the map on how they saw this fight ending. Some thought it would be over in a matter or minutes by way of a quick knock out while others saw it going all the way to the end and being decided by the judges. This fight really was hard to decide on, personally I ran every scenario through my head and to be honest I wasn’t sure how it would end. I’m actually rather happy about that because it allowed me to watch and enjoy the fight without having to be worried about not being right about the winner and how it was won.
I still think both women are amazing fighters and look forward to watching them fight again — whether it be a rematch or some new opponent. Bring on more women’s mixed martial arts!!!
