As a Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan, I was extremely disappointed with them last season, as the whole 2008 season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just collapsed. Some will argue that the defense had given up and started to slack off once the defensive genius Monte Kiffin announced that he would be leaving the team to help his son coach college. Hopefully we will see a superbowl caliber team tonight when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers open up the 2009 pre-season against the Tennessee Titans.
Many changes have been made since last season, many huge changes. Head coach Jon Gruden was replaced by Raheem Morris, along with cuts by Warrick Dunn, Joey Galloway, Cato June, Ike Hilliard and Pro Bowler Derrick Brooks. So that leaves us with a younger, and hopefully better team this season. So tonight will be a test of the players, particularly the quarterbacks to see what this new offensive team is about when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the Tennessee Titans in their first pre-season game of 2009.
I am very eager to see how the new quarterbacks will work out, as Raheem Morris will be giving all of them a chance to play, and hopefully it is divided a little more evenly than what is intended in the game tonight against the Tennessee Titans.
In tonight’s game starting at 8 oclock, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided to let the veteran Luke McCown be the starting quarterback. Raheem wants him to go about 2 or 3 series, and then he will be relieved by veteran quarterback Byron Leftwich, who in my opinion should get the starting position anyway, at least for the preseason and depending on how each quarterback performs will be the deciding factor in the whole thing. This is not a Tampa Bay offense that we are used too now that Gruden no longer commands the offensive plays, so we should not be seeing any crap like 3 yard screen plays when it is 3rd and 15.
After the veteran quarterbacks get their couple of series, then Raheem Morris will put in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers first round draft pick, and second quarterback of the 2009 draft Josh Freeman. I have read some of the training camp stories about this kid, and he has his good days and bad days, tonight vs teh Tennessee Titans he will get his chance to prove to the coaches that he can hang in the National Football League and play with the best. Although I think in a couple of years Josh Freeman will be leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to another Super Bowl victory, he will more than likely be a 3rd back up throughout the 2009-2010 football season, you never know though.
After the rookies couple sets of series the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to let Josh Johnson take some snaps at the quarterback position. Josh Johnson is in his second year as a professional, and was labeled inactive most of last years season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to injury. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 5th round of the 2008 draft, and this young kid has a lot of potential to be a great back up quarterback, although some would argue that he could make a great starter one day if he can stay healthy. All I know is that I am going to be excited to see him get some snaps in tonight’s game against the Tennessee Titans.
One disappointment in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2009 pre-season opener is that we will not be seeing any action from Cadillac Williams, who is the Buccaneers star quarterback that has been plagued with 2 knee injury’s in the past 2 seasons. The reason he is sitting out is a caution decision by the head coach Raheem Morris, who said that he is sitting out for the first two pre-season games, and he will possibly start when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers play the Miami Dolphins in their 3rd pre-season game of the 2009 season.
So what can we expect in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers first game of the preseason against the Tennessee Titans? We will see some hard core running from Earnest Graham and Derrick Ward, and you can surely expect Clifton Smith to get some hand offs also. I am anxious to see how the Buccaneers new offense will work, maybe we will see some deep balls thrown, which has been a rarity while being coached under Jon Gruden.
