The Prince William County Fair is open to everyone this weekend and is celebrating its 60th anniversary in Mannassas, Virginia. Back in 1949, the Prince William County Fair was setup by veterans of World War II who wanted to promote the county’s rich agriculture industry that had been ‘put on hold’ during the war effort. However, it wasn’t without a lot of hard work from the Prince William Veterans Farm Club that was setup to run the Prince William County Fair, by the fair’s four founders Robert Beahm, Robert Tyrrell, Kemp Clemen and Joe Johnson.
Even though there are only 3 dairy farms left from the 100 original ones all those years ago, there are many people who turn out each year to celebrate the local dairy industry and how much it has benefited the local community. Fairs are interesting and entertaining for the whole family and it’s not just the kids who have fun on the rides!
Being Virgina’s biggest fair, it does draw a lot of people – some 80,000 over the three days last year – so it should be a good turn out and there will be lots to do. Personally, I love fairs as everyone is in a good mood, and if the weather holds out then it becomes an enjoyable day out for the whole family. There are chances for the children (and adults) to see the different animals and to become involved in some of the many different shows over the weekend – which is fully packed with tractor pulling, martial arts, wrestling, and motorcross.
After you’ve experienced some of the more sensible activities at the fair you’ll be able to go on the big wheel – which is personally one of my favorites and one that doesn’t make you too sick when you go on. And, after you’ve finished on the rides you can see some of the pet shows, story telling and baby contests. But, if you’re still feeling lie you want to be cheered up then there is also a few live comedy shows that should get you in a good mood.
And, like most of the other fairs that many of us go to it’s not heavy on the pocket, which is something I like about going to a fair. You’ll find that a family of four will be able to get in for less than $20, and if you take someone over 60 with you then they’ll get in completely free and also be able to get a free hot dog and drink. Something that helps in the current hard times we’re all facing in the recession.
So, if you’re looking for something for the whole family to do this weekend, with lots of fun and an enjoyable (but educational) time for the kids then you should look at going to the Prince William County Fair, and help them celebrate their long lasting success.
